Form and Style
The
narrative arc of our documentary, and overall structure, will be firmly rooted
in the building progression of the two breweries and their respective owners
relationship. The beer, the politics, and the economics will all come secondary
to these pillars, as they will provide the foundation of the documentary. They will be touched on in tangents
from the main narrative but will not be explored in detail. We don’t want this
film to be so much of a informative piece, but more observational, with
information sprinkled throughout, of two men and their creations; their
similarities and their differences. We will follow both John and Mike in their
pursuit of creating and opening breweries this semester. We want to document
their friendship, their struggles and hopefully their successes. In terms of
image, it is going to be very simple. I want the characters being documented
and the people filling each shot to tell the story, not extreme camera
movements or excessive editing. In terms of lighting, we will use all natural
light with the exception of in the interviews if it is needed. Very simple
framing of shots with simple camera movements, but with an array of
perspectives, shot distances, and angles. The feel and look of the film will be
very ‘earthy” with lots of browns, ambers, and greens. The tone will be very
light, with comedy sewn into the narrative throughout. Sound mixing will be very interesting,
as there will be a mix of A-roll interview, music, crowd noise, and people mic’d
within crowds. How these will mix and interweave will become clearer in post.
